No Shortage of Ways to Play
Located in the beautiful Koosharem Valley, High Top Boys Ranch offers the ideal setting for boys to experience the best of the great outdoors. After school and on weekends, students may participate individually and in groups the following activities:
Animal Care: High Top Ranch is a working ranch, and students have daily interaction with a range of animals including rabbits, turkeys, pigs, goats, cows, sheep, and horses. Students are assigned regular rotations of caring for different animals, eventually learning the specific diet and growth patterns of each animal.
Camping: Camping out in the real wilderness is a weekly experience for students in the months from May to September. One to two night overnighters offer students the opportunity to study nature, learn cooking and wilderness skills, and relax under the starry sky. These outings also include fishing expeditions, water-skiing and swimming, and nature projects.
Fishing: High Top Ranch offers students a chance to fish in our trout pond as well as take weekend trips to other choice fishing areas in the area. Other local fishing holes are close enough, that in the summer students who are caught up on school work may get to participate in evening fishing excursions several times per week. The excitement of catching a fish is only exceeded by the enjoyment of a grilled fish dinner.
Horsemanship: With horses suited for every type of rider, High Top Ranch encourages each boy to learn to ride. All students are taught to care for the horses. Horses also play an important role in the equine assisted therapy offered at the ranch.
Scouting: High Top Ranch has its own chartered Boy Scout troop led by three Eagle Scout ranking counselors. Boys work toward rank advancements and merit badges and gain experience in leadership and new skills.
Sports: Our expansive ranch provides a large outdoor field for soccer and softball. Students also enjoy playing basketball, volleyball, plenty of outdoor games, and riding dirt bikes. Those boys who are interested may also learn to wrestle, and compete in local wrestling tournaments.
Vocational Skills: High Top Ranch gives students the chance to experience common work activities such as construction, farming, calving, harvesting crops, and gardening. Students assist counselors in baling hay, planting crops, laying cement, building fences, and maintaining fields.
Winter Activities: Students at High Top Boys Ranch enjoy skiing, making snow forts, and ice skating on the pond during the winter months. Students also take advantage of our large indoor gym and rec room in the winter.
Woodworking: Our woodworking program is housed in its own separate barn and features state-of-the-art equipment. Daily classes are offered to teach students the skills of a craftsman. They design, construct, and stain their own projects such as polished boxes, chess boards, and small furniture pieces. Students may also learn leatherworking to create their own wallets, bags, or western jewelry.
